Excerpt from a Bharatanatyam recital by dancer Aranyani Bhargav at the India International Centre, New Delhi on Sunday, February 28th 2016. This tillana is choreographed by Aranyani incorporating elements of Krishna into the nritta or pure dance sections of the tillana. The peacock feather, the flute and Krishna's playfulness defined how the mai adavus and korves in this tillana were choreographed. Prince Rama Varma takes the music students of Saamagaana Sangeetha Sabha, Bangalore, through a small but beautiful portrayal of Raga Brindavani, before teaching them the brilliant Thillana in the same raga, composed by Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna.
Brilliant rendition of Dr.Balamuralikrishna's beautiful Thillana in Brindavani by the children of Perla. I am constantly amazed by how perfectly Prince Rama Varma gets his students to sing.
Prince Rama Varma, the unassuming representative of so many legendary lineages, teaches the beautiful little Thillana in Raga Brindavani by Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna, to the music students of Rajalakshmi Teacher at Perumbavur in April 2018.

Bharatanatyam, also spelt Bharathanatyam, is a Classical Dance form of South India, said to be originated in Thanjavoor of Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam, It was known as "Daasiyattam" since performed by Devadasies in temples of Tamil Nadu long ago. The name 'Bharatanatyam' is derived from three basic concepts of Bhava, Raga and Thaala. The modern Bharatanatyam was systematically regularized by well known 'Thanjavoor Brothers', Ponnayya, Chinnayya, Sivanandam and Vativelu. The dance is performed in the stage as Nritham, Nrithyam and Natyam. Bharatanatyam is based on the theories of the books 'Natyasaasthram' and 'Abhinaya Darpanam'. The dance form is based on 'Adavu' (steps) and 'Hasthamudra' (hand gestures). There are 64 basic 'Adavu' and they are divided into 9 parts, on which 'Thattadavu', 'Naatadavu', 'Kuthithumettadavu', 'Mandiadavu', 'Sarikkal' and 'Thattumettu' are very important. Communication is done through 'bhavabhinaya' (facial expression) and 'hasthamudra' (hand gestures). The performance starts with the prayers to God Ganapathi and worship of Nataraja Moorthi. The Music of Bharatanatyam is based on Carnatic Classical Music. Padmabhushan Smt.Sudha Ragunathanm Sings " Thillana " Song , Composition of Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna , Brindavani Ragam, Adi Talam in Sukha Baavam. Kalaimamani, Sangeetha Choodamani, Padmashri, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. Sudha Ragunathan, the leading light in the constellation of contemporary Carnatic Musicians, has taken gigantic strides in the realm of achievement not by chance but by sheer commitment, soaring intensity and focus of a Zen Master to excel, incessant activity of the grey cells and a singular capacity to translate her musical imagination into stunning vocal expression. She is the scion of a proud, tall guru parampara (her Guru being none other than the much respected, Padmabhushan, Dr. M.L.Vasanthakumari) but she has evolved and grown much taller, entirely because the leit motif in her music is her infinite capacity to never lose direction, concentrating exclusively on the pertinent and eschewing irrelevance. Sudha Ragunathan has been showered with awards and titles too numerous to enumerate, but she hardly ever allows her status of an icon to adversely influence her innate attributes of humility, congeniality, humaneness and approachability. It is true that her dynamic stage presence, dignity of deportment and pleasing demeanour have endeared her to one and all. She has been featured in many prestigious festivals in India and abroad, and has received international acclaim and appreciation. It is not an exaggeration that she has become a role model for the youthful aspirants of Carnatic Music in the present day scenario. Sudha Ragunathan’s most recent recognition is the National Award – “Padmabhushan ” from the President of India on 2015. Sudha Ragunathan, as the Poet said, is one who tirelessly strives and stretches her arms towards perfection.
